Install and use
Linux on x86_64. The installer needs no sudo.
Install
$ curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Lucas-BRT/pionus/main/install.sh | bash
This installs version 0.15.0. The setup asks before anything that needs sudo.
The default model is qwen2.5-coder-1.5b, 1.1 GB.
For a walkthrough, see the tutorial.
Drivers are installed with apt; Ubuntu 24.04 and derivatives are tested.
Requirements
- Platform: Linux on x86_64, with glibc 2.35 or newer, and git.
- Downloaded by the setup: the default model, 1.1 GB, and the pinned llama.cpp build, 31.6 MB.
- Distributions: Ubuntu 22.04 and newer, Debian 12+, Fedora 36+. Not Alpine or other musl systems.
- Disk: about 1.5 GB free in
~/.local/sharefor the default model. - Models and llama.cpp go to
~/.local/share/pionus; caches go to~/.cache/pionus.
See the plan first
To see what the setup would do first:
$ curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Lucas-BRT/pionus/main/install.sh | bash -s -- --no-setup $ pionus setup --dry-run
It lists every step and changes nothing.
Installer options
After bash -s -- when piping:
| Option | Effect |
|---|---|
--version 0.3.0 | install that release instead of the latest |
--prefix DIR | install in DIR/bin and DIR/share |
--no-setup | only install; run pionus setup later |
--update | install only if the release is not the version installed, without the setup |
--verify | also verify the download's build provenance with gh |
--yes | answer yes to the setup's questions |
--uninstall | remove pionus (models, caches and config are kept) |
--purge | remove it, plus the models, llama.cpp, the benchmark, the caches and the config |
--system | remove it, plus the OpenVINO that the setup installed (asks before using sudo) |
If ~/.local/bin is not on your PATH, the installer prints the line to add.
Check the download
The installer checks the archive against SHA256SUMS.
Releases after 0.14.0 also carry a GitHub build attestation. With the GitHub CLI:
gh attestation verify pionus-x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu.tar.gz --repo Lucas-BRT/pionus
Or add --verify to the installer.
Use
git add -p # print the message pionus # review it, then commit pionus --commit
The message follows the style of your history.
On every commit
pionus hook install
# the editor opens with the message written
git commitIt works from any git client and never blocks a commit.
Update
pionus update
Installs the latest release. Models and settings stay. To be told about new releases, turn on the update notice.
Uninstall
pionus uninstall # the binary, the models, llama.cpp, the benchmark, the caches and the config pionus uninstall --system # and the OpenVINO the setup installed (asks before using sudo)
It lists what it removes and asks first.
Drivers stay, since other programs may use them. The hook stays in each repository: run pionus hook uninstall first.
